When Is Hunting Season? 

Here in Gallatin County, the hunting season is broken down into parts—archery and general hunting. You can only hunt with a bow during archery season, and it runs from September 2 to October 15. The general hunting season is when you use rifles, and it starts October 21 and goes until November 26. Youth hunting takes place during the gap between these two seasons.

The state of Montana is divided into seven administrative regions by Montana’s Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Big Sky resides in Region 3, about 18000 square miles, 40% private land, and the rest public. Big game hunting is a major attraction in Region 3, and people travel from near and far to try their luck here.   

The most popular animal to hunt here is elk. In fact, about 50 percent of all Montana’s elk harvest happens in Big Sky. Other popular animals to hunt are black bears, mule deermountain goatsbighorn sheep, moose, and antelope.  

Where Are the Best Places To Go Hunting in Big Sky? 

You cannot hunt in Yellowstone National Park. But that’s okay—that’s what makes it one of the best spots for wildlife viewing in the world! You can hunt in Gallatin National Forest, though. Some other popular locations are Porcupine Creek, Taylor Fork, and Cinnamon Creek Trail. It’s each hunter’s responsibility to know what areas are private land and what are public. If you’re unfamiliar with the lay of the land, consider embarking on a guided hunt with a local outfitter 

Do I Need To Have a Hunting License?  

Yes, you need to have a hunting license in the state of Montana. The law states that each animal requires a specific hunting license. These are available through Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks
